Does your busy schedule make it impossible to attend a traditional American Heart Association (AHA) certification course?
The UNCH American Heart Association Training Center offers two online AHA renewal options for select participants.
This renewal course meets all AHA requirements for certification, but is limited to a maximum of three people per course. One-on-one training is also available in the UNCH AHA Training Center.
Participants will receive the same training as traditional classes including all cognitive and psychomotor components, written testing and resuscitation simulation emphasizing Team Oriented Resuscitation.
Part 1: Online cognative component of an AHA class. We assign you a key code to take the online class a www.onlineaha.org. You complete this class at your convenience. You can stop and restart the class so that it fits your learning schedule. Once you complete the online Part 1, you come to our Chapel Hill, NC Training Center to complete the Parts 2/3.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
This course from the American Heart Association has been updated to reflect new science based on the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC.
This program uses eSimulation technology to present realistic patient scenarios. Students are presented with 5 BLS cases and an online multiple-choice written exam.
While interacting with the program, students assess each patient, formulate a treatment plan based on 2010 BLS guidelines, and provide treatment.
Successful completion of Part 1, the cognitive component, and Parts 2 and 3, skills practice and testing with an AHA BLS Instructor, are the requirements for obtaining an AHA BLS Healthcare Provider course completion card.
Part 1, the cognitive portion of HeartCode BLS, focuses on what healthcare providers need to know to perform CPR in a wide variety of in- and out-of hospital settings:
- Initiating the Chain of Survival
- Performing prompt, high-quality chest compressions for adult, child, and infant victims
- Initiating early use of an AED
- Providing appropriate rescue breaths
- Practicing 2-rescuer team CPR
- Relieving choking
In Parts 2 and 3, the student will demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS skills, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use. Part 2 includes a hands-on skills practice session using a VAM or with an authorized AHA BLS Instructor. Part 3 features a skills test with an authorized AHA BLS Instructor.
Schedule:
Once you complete the online portion, the UNCH AHA Training Center will work with you to schedule Part 2 and Part 3 (skill practice and testing). Plan for your skill session to last two hours.
Fees:
Requirements:
You must have a current or recently expired AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers Card. HeartCode is not available for initial certifications.
Be sure to bring your HeartCode Part 1 certificate of completion to your skill session.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
This course from the American Heart Association has been updated to reflect new science based on the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC.
HeartCode ACLS Part 1 uses eSimulation technology to present realistic patient scenarios.
Students are presented with a team dynamics lesson, 10 ACLS hospital-based case scenarios, and a written exam.
While interacting with the program, students assess each patient, formulate a treatment plan based on ACLS guidelines, and provide treatment.
Successful completion of Part 1, the cognitive component, and Parts 2 and 3, skills practice and testing with an AHA ACLS Instructor or a voice-assisted manikin (VAM) system, meets the requirements for obtaining an AHA ACLS Provider course completion card.
At the conclusion, participants should be able to:
- Recognize and initiate early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
- Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating automated external defibrillator (AED) use
- Recognize and manage respiratory arrest
- Recognize and manage cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post–cardiac arrest care
- Recognize and initiate early management of acute coronary syndromes, including appropriate disposition
- Recognize and initiate early management of stroke, including appropriate disposition
- Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
In Parts 2 and 3, the student will demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS skills, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use. Part 2 includes a hands-on BLS skills practice session and testing with an authorized AHA BLS Instructor. Part 3 consists of Megacode skill testing and Megacode team resuscitation simulation using human patient simulation manikins.
Schedule:
Once you complete the online portion, the UNCH AHA Training Center will work with you to schedule Part 2 and Part 3 (skill practice and testing). Plan for your skill session to last three hours.
Fees:
- HeartCode Part 1 online key and skill testing: $225
- HeartCode Part 2/3 skill practice and testing only: $100
Requirements:
You must have a current or recently expired AHA ACLS Card. HeartCode is not available for initial certifications.
Be sure to bring your HeartCode Part 1 certificate of completion to your skill session.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
This course from the American Heart Association has been updated to reflect new science based on the 2010 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC.
HeartCode PALS Part 1 is a web-based, self-directed program that teaches healthcare providers knowledge and skills needed to recognize and prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children.
Using eSimulation technology, students assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings where they can apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning about pediatric advanced life support.
After completing HeartCode PALS Part 1, students must successfully complete a hands-on skills practice and testing session (parts 2 and 3) with an AHA PALS Instructor. Students will receive an AHA PALS course completion card, valid for two years, upon successful completion of all three parts.
- Recognize and manage cardio/respiratory arrest
- Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance
In Parts 2 and 3, the student will demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS skills, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating AED use. Part 2 includes a hands-on BLS skills practice session and testing with an authorized AHA BLS Instructor. Part 3 features your Core Case skill testing and Core Case team resuscitation simulation using human patient simulation manikins.
Schedule:
Once you complete the online portion, the UNCH AHA Training Center will work with you to schedule Part 2 and Part 3 (skill practice and testing). Plan for your skill session to last three hours.
