Cancer

When you’re diagnosed with cancer, you want the best medical care available. At UNC Cancer Care, we partner with you to find the cancer treatment plan best suited for you. You have access to the nationally recognized physicians of UNC, as well as the innovative research and groundbreaking clinical trials of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, all in one place. But that’s not all. You’ll also find a compassionate partner who supports you through treatment, recovery and survivorship.

Exemplary Cancer Care

When you choose UNC Cancer Care, you join North Carolinians from every county in their fight against cancer. Our clinics see nearly 200,000 patient visits each year. You can trust our established approach to care, too, because:

  • UNC Medical Center is recognized as one of the top hospitals for cancer care by US News & World Report in its America’s Best Hospitals guide.
  • UNC Lineberger is one of only 49 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, and the NCI rates us as “exceptional,” its top rating for cancer centers.
  • We are a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers, a Blue Cross Blue Shield designation awarded to hospitals that offer expert specialty care for these conditions.
  • We’re included in the 2018 edition of “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs,” a list by Becker’s Hospital Review recognizing programs that lead the way in quality patient care, cancer outcomes and research.
  • Our cancer care program is accredited by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons, a demonstration of our commitment to provide comprehensive high-quality, patient-centered care close to home.
  • Our patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to care has been a model for other cancer centers and oncology programs across the nation.

Conquering Cancer Together

At UNC Cancer Care, you’re the most important member of your cancer care team. Your doctors, nurses and other support people work together to make sure you have the information you need to make decisions about your health care.

Count on your oncology nurse navigator to answer your questions, keep track of your appointments, connect you with support services and address any concerns that arise during your treatment.

Other members of your team may include oncologists (cancer doctors), physicians who specialize in other body systems (like the lungs or the reproductive system, depending on your type of cancer), nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, dietitians, chaplains, lay navigators, cancer researchers, psychologists, pharmacists, therapists and others. They’ll check in with you and each other regularly to coordinate your care.

Specialized Care for Seniors and Children

If you’re an older adult, you may also be seen by an oncologist who specializes in senior health as part of our geriatric oncology program. If your child has cancer, you’ll find family-centered services for children and teens through pediatric hematology-oncology.

Support Through Recovery and Beyond

Because we know you may experience effects even after your treatment ends, count on ongoing follow-up care and survivorship support from the nationally-recognized Comprehensive Cancer Support Program. You can also stop in to access resources and support within the N.C. Cancer Hospital at the Patient and Family Resource Center.
