UNC Hospice

At UNC Hospice, our goal is to provide specialized care focused on comfort, compassion, and support for patients and families to patients with advanced illness. We strive to ensure all patients with advanced illness have the opportunity to live fully and comfortably. It is the mission of our interdisciplinary team to care for your loved ones with the highest level of compassion. As part of the spectrum of care at UNC Health, your hospice team is led by UNC physicians who will work in partnership with your current physicians. Our team will be there to walk alongside you and your family during this time.

Who is eligible for hospice care?

Hospice is for patients with serious illness who want to prioritize comfort-focused care and quality of life instead of curative treatments in the final months of life. If you want to learn more about hospice, or if you think this type of care is right for you, call us at 984-215-2650 or talk to your doctor.

Our Services

Hospice focuses on providing care where you are – whether that’s at home or in a living facility. UNC Hospice is licensed by Medicare and Medicaid, and is a covered benefit of most private insurance carriers. Care is provided regardless of diagnosis, age, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or ability to pay.

The hospice team is available to support you in the following ways:

  • Nursing care as needed, which includes 24 hour, 365 days a year on-call access.
  • Medical social workers to offer emotional support, help assess needs, and make community service referrals.
  • Certified nursing assistants to provide assistance with personal care.
  • Chaplaincy services to offer spiritual support.
  • Trained patient/family volunteers to provide support meeting a broad range of needs.
  • Bereavement care is available to families and anyone in the community following the loss of a loved one.
  • Medications, medical supplies and equipment related to your terminal illness.
  • Physical, occupational, speech therapy and dietary counseling as needed.

Hospice works closely with patients’ primary doctors to ensure patients get the best and most appropriate care. Our Hospice Medical Director is also available to provide oversight and address any medical needs.

Who We Are

We are a member organization of UNC Health and partner closely with the many hospitals, clinics, and care providers of the health system to maintain continuity of care for our patients. In 2020, hospice was recognized by UNC Health for outstanding and compassionate care with a Carolina Cares Award for going above and beyond to meet the needs of our patients and families. UNC Hospice is an entity of the UNC Medical Center and partners closely with many other hospitals, clinics, and care providers.

Our History

UNC Hospice has been serving residents in the Triangle area for over 30 years and became a Medicare-certified hospice organization in 1988. Our organization was started by a group of physicians and nurses who care deeply for the members of our community, and who set out with the sole purpose of serving families in need. Our years of experience mean that we’re able to reliably bring the best care possible to you and your loved ones.

Since the founding of UNC Hospice, services have expanded to six counties in the Triangle region of North Carolina. In 2017, we opened an inpatient facility, the SECU Jim & Betsy Bryan Hospice Home in Pittsboro, North Carolina to better serve our patients and growing needs of the community.

Where We Provide Care

UNC Hospice provides care to patients in Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Lee, Orange, and Wake counties. Most patients receive services in their privates residences, but care can also be provided in contracted nursing facilities, adult care homes, and assisted living facilities.

When care in the home is not possible due to medical needs or caregiving challenges, our hospice home provides short-term inpatient care to our patients and families. The SECU Jim & Betsy Bryan Hospice Home receives patients from any location for this inpatient treatment.

Make A Gift

Your support is critical to our ability to continue serving this great community. Gifts may be designated as memorials or honorariums, and we will notify the family of your kindness (without specifying the amount of your gift). Your contributions help provide care for our patients in UNC Hospice, as well as support our Grief Counseling Services offered without charge to the entire community.

What Our Families Say

Serving patients at such an important time in life gives meaning to our work. Hear from some of the families we’ve had the privilege to care for:

“Every UNC Hospice provider was consistently kind, responsive, and very skilled in all they did to ensure my mom’s final weeks on Earth were as comfortable, calm, and positive as was possible. Thanks to all.”

“My husband’s sickness was a shock to us. When they told us he would not get better, UNC Hospice was a great help. His nurse was wonderful as were all the other members. If he needed something, all we had to do was ask. Thank you.”

“Everyone from hospice gave of their time as much as humanly possible. The fact that my dad was in an assisted living facility allowed both staff to collaborate, and they did that extremely well. Thank you!”
