Test Specifications

For specific requirements, see individual tests.

Reporting of Laboratory Results

  • The results of laboratory tests can only be reported to physicians or their designated assistants. The laboratory will not report results to patients and patients should not be instructed to call the laboratory for results.
  • Patients can request a copy of their results by contacting Health Information Management at 984-974-3226 (UNC Health Medical Center HIM). Test results obtained from other entities (Rex, Caldwell, Johnston, etc.) must be obtained from their respective Health Information Management offices.
  • In order to prevent errors in patient identification, telephone reports will be given out by the appropriate lab ONLY when the patient's name AND Hospital unit number are provided by the requesting party.
  • Critical values for designated tests and toxic drug levels are reported by telephone to the requesting physician or other designated personnel in accordance with individual lab policies. Critical and toxic limits are listed with individual tests in the Procedures section of the manual.
  • Epic@UNC test results are available through UNC MyChart. Patients or providers that do not have access to MyChart should contact Health Information Management at 984-974-3226 for copies of laboratory reports or to obtain MyChart access.
  • Authorized personnel can access laboratory test results through the Epic@UNC system. For more information regarding the Epic@UNC system, please contact ISD Customer Support at 984-974-7252.
