Types of Navigators

Our navigation team is dedicated to providing a comprehensive approach to your care. Each navigator plays a different role in your cancer care.

Oncology Nurse Navigator

The Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) is an experienced oncology registered nurse who is an expert in cancer care, as well as in your individualized care plan. Your ONN is the person you can reach out to with any questions or concerns. They have a direct connection to your physician and your whole care team.  No matter where you are in your treatment, your navigator will help you understand what is coming next. You can think of your oncology nurse navigator as your personal guide through your cancer journey.

Oncology Patient Navigator

The Oncology Patient Navigator (OPN) is a highly trained expert in coordinating the non-medical aspects of your cancer care. Your OPN’s goal is to decrease challenges such as transportation, lodging and emotional and financial strain by connecting you with various resources and support services available at UNC Health.

Oncology Volunteer Navigator

The Oncology Volunteer Navigator (OVN) is a student or community volunteer who is trained to communicate with the medical team to best serve you. Whether on the phone or in-person, your OVN can assist you and your family to connect to resources that can help. You may enjoy a visit from them during a hospital stay or while getting outpatient treatment, or you may receive a phone call to see how you are doing.
