Mohs Surgery

Mohs Surgery is a highly specialized surgical procedure to remove skin cancers. Our physicians know early detection of skin cancer offers patients better treatments and greater chances of being cured. This procedure was developed more than 50 years ago by Dr. Frederic Mohs, professor of surgery at the University of Wisconsin.

Conditions

Diseases and diagnoses treated using Mohs surgery at UNC Health Mohs & Dermatologic Surgery include:

  • Basal cell carcinomas
  • Other skin cancers
  • Squamous cell carcinomas

Mohs surgery involves three separate steps:

  1. The surgical removal or excision of tissue
  2. Processing the specimen for microscopic review
  3. The microscopic examination of the prepared slide
