What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a branch of alternative medicine which can be traced back to eastern origin and more specifically Chinese medicine.  It has been used for thousands of years. The principle of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are inherent patterns of energy flow called Qi (pronounced “chee”) throughout the body that are essential for health and well-being. Any disruptions to the flow of energy are believed to be responsible for the manifestation of symptoms causing pathophysiological conditions.

Therefore, acupuncture treatment describes a family of procedures involving the stimulation of anatomical locations to correct the imbalances using thin, non-toxic, and metallic needles on the skin. Placing the needles at the various acupuncture points on the body stimulates the nervous system to release special chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals may thus change the experience of pain, or they may trigger the release of other natural chemicals, which influence the body’s own internal healing system.
