General Directions to UNC Medical Campus

Directions from the North

  • UNC Hospitals is located at 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

  • Take NC 86 South (which becomes Martin Luther King Boulevard-formerly Airport Road) to downtown Chapel Hill.

  • Turn right onto Cameron Avenue (2nd light after Franklin Street) then make an immediate left onto Pittsboro Street.

  • Bear left when the road splits. Go straight across South Columbia Street and you will be on Manning Drive near UNC Hospitals.

    • Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals and is available in the Dogwood Decks. The Dogwood deck is three tenths of a mile on the right.

    • For the Ambulatory Care Center, turn right on West Drive and right again on Mason Farm Road. The ACC entrance is ¼ mile on the left. The parking lot surrounds the building.

    • For Emergency Room Parking, stay on Manning Drive past the parking decks and turn left on Emergency Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.

Directions from the South

  • UNC Hospitals is located at 101 Manning Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

  • Take US 15-501 North to Chapel Hill. US 15-501 becomes South Columbia Street at the NC 54 intersection.

  • From South Columbia Street, turn right on Manning Drive.

    • Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck. The Dogwood deck is three tenths of a mile on the right.

    • For the Ambulatory Care Center, turn right on West Drive and right again on Mason Farm Road. The ACC entrance is ¼ mile on the left. The parking lot surrounds the building.

    • For Emergency Room Parking, stay on Manning Drive past the parking decks and turn left on Emergency Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.

Directions from the East

  • Take 1-40 West to exit #273A.

  • Take NC 54 West to Chapel Hill.

  • Take US 15-501 South to Manning Drive.

  • Turn right onto Manning Drive.

    • Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck. The Dogwood Deck is nine tenths of a mile from US 15-501 on the left.

    • For the Ambulatory Care Center, turn left on West Drive and right on Mason Farm Road. The ACC entrance is ¼ mile on the left. The parking lot surrounds the building.

    • For Emergency Room parking, turn right on Emergency Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.

Direction from the West

  • Take NC 54 East to Chapel Hill.

  • Exit at Columbia Street/US 15-501 and turn left onto South Columbia Street.

  • From South Columbia Street, turn right on Manning Drive.

    • Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck. The Dogwood Deck is three tenths of a mile on the right.

    • For the Ambulatory Care Center, turn right on West Drive and right again on Mason Farm Road. The ACC entrance is ¼ mile on the left. The parking lot surrounds the building.

Directions to the UNC medical campus from the Durham area

  • Take US 15-501 South bypass to Manning Drive.

  • Turn right onto Manning Drive.

    • Patient and visitor parking for the Hospitals is available in the Dogwood Deck. The Dogwood Deck is nine tenths of a mile from US 15-501 on the left.

    • For the Ambulatory Care Center, turn left on West Drive and right on Mason Farm Road. The ACC entrance is ¼ mile on the left. The parking lot surrounds the building.

    • For Emergency Room parking, turn right on Emergency Drive, following the Emergency Room signs.

Visitor Parking and Valet Services

Emergency Department and Urgent Care Center Patients
See the Valet Attendant outside the Emergency Room main entrance. One vehicle per patient is allowed in the lot.
Cost of non-emergent vehicles is $12.00.
All other Patients and Visitors
Dogwood Parking Decks or the Ambulatory Care Center parking lot. The Dogwood Deck is located on Manning Drive across from UNC Hospitals. Mapping and directions are available from the the searchable UNC Campus Map (search for "dogwood").
Cost: $1.50 / hour to a maximum of $10 for a full day.

Golf Carts

We offer golf cart tram services between the front of the hospitals and the Dogwood and Cardinal parking decks.
This service is offered every 15min from
7:30am - 9:30pm on weekdays and from 9:00am - 9:30pm on weekends.

Emergency Department

  • Valet Attendant outside the Emergency Room main entrance. Open 24hrs per day and 365 days per year. One vehicle per patient is allowed in the lot. Cost of non-emergent vehicles is $12.00.

  • Main Valet: Available to any of the Hospitals and the Clinical Cancer Center in front of the N.C. Hospitals. Hours 5:30AM–7:30PM weekdays. Closed weekends and holidays. Cost: $12.

Cancer Hospital Valet

  • Recommended for patient admitted to the Cancer Hospital or their families. Located in the Manning Drive parking lot immediately in front of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital. Open 6:00am – 6:00pm weekdays and closed on weekends and holidays. Cost: $12.00 (valet location takes cash only).

Parking and Valet Coupons

  • Coupons for the parking deck will allow you to enter and leave the deck multiple times during the day without acquiring extra charges. Available at the Hospitals Parking Office located in the building in front of N.C. Children’s Hospital. Cost: $12 each.

  • Valet coupons can be purchased from the Valet Cashier and come in books of five and cost $45

What is the Visitation Policy

Information desks are a great place to find timely information and guide you to your destination. Family members and friends are welcome to visit as long as they are healthy. Visitors suffering from a cold, virus, infection or other illness should remain at home.
General visiting hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The following units have special visitation policies:

  • Burn Center
  • Cardiac Care Unit
  • Intensive Care Units
  • Intermediate and Intensive Care Nurseries
  • Psychiatry

See the nurse on the unit for details, check at any Guest Services desk, or call Patient Information at (919) 966-4131.

Family passes are required for all visiting outside of visiting hours.

  • Family passes are required for everyone at all times in the following units: Women’s and Children’s Hospital
  • Neurology Floors: 3, 4, 5
  • Visitation by minors: Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times and may only visit during approved hours.
  • Family pass required for Memorial and Cancer Hospitals
  • Minors under 18 years old are not permitted to stay overnight.
  • Children under 12 may visit in ICU’s after completing a screening form.
  • Additional visitation restrictions may apply for children during flu season.
  • Live flowers, fresh fruit and plants are not permitted in all ICU’s, Bone Marrow Unit, Pediatric ICU and other select units in the hospital. If sending flowers, please mention that the recipient is in the ICU to the florist so alternatives can be discussed. Contact your loved one’s nurse for more information. Sorry, pets are not allowed in the hospital.

What Should I Bring

Please be aware that not all patients transferred to UNC will be admitted. Consider the following items at the time of transfer.

For all patients
  • Your Photo ID
  • insurance information
  • medical record, prescriptions, general practitioner contact information
  • contact information for loved ones
  • paperwork and contact information for healthcare power of attorney or medical decision-maker
  • change of clothes for discharge
  • additional advanced directives
  • a phone charger

For parents

  • child's pajamas,
  • favorite blanket or toy or other item to make your child more at ease and comfortable with his/her surroundings
  • special adaptive equipment or any equipment used for special care needs at home such as wheelchairs for chronic care, strollers, splints, etc.
  • If planning to stay overnight, please bring personal items such as medications, clothes, toiletries, phone chargers.
  • Nursing mothers, please bring your breast pump and supplies in case you need it.
  • Every discharged child under 8 years old or 80 lbs will need to go home in an approved restraint (car seat or booster)

Planning for discharge will take place early for your stay so consider:

  • transportation
  • clothing
  • support at time of discharge (family or friends)
  • discussion about returning to home hospital or extended care facility
  • follow up visits
  • Financial considerations
  • Ask your nurse about Carolina Care at Home Convenience Center
