Employees

The pharmacy enterprise of UNC Health is an organization of more than 450 people who focus their attention on caring for patients of the UNC Health System. We are culturally diverse and have a variety of backgrounds, interests, capabilities and experience.

Ross Thompson is the System Vice President of Pharmacy Services for UNC Health System. John Valgus is the Executive Director of Pharmacy for The Triangle West Region of the Health System, which includes UNC Medical Center, UNC Hillsborough Hospital, Chatham Hospital, and Youth Behavioral Health, as well as multiple offsite infusion centers and ambulatory care clinics. The Department employs over 150 Pharmacists.

Practice Model

The pharmacy department for the Triangle West Region of UNC Health employs an integrated model of practice, including operations, acute and ambulatory clinical services, finance/business oversight, medication policy/optimization, and academic/research enterprises.

At the Medical Center, operations run through a network of inpatient pharmacist, including a central inpatient pharmacy and satellite pharmacies in perioperative services, pediatrics, oncology, and investigational drugs. The Hillsborough Campus houses an integrated central inpatient pharmacy.

In the retail setting, services are offered through a network of retail locations, including the Central Outpatient Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care Center Pharmacy, Hillsborough Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy, Employee Pharmacy, Eastowne Medical Office Building Pharmacy, and the Panther Creek Retail pharmacy located in Cary, NC. The Medical Center also accesses specialty pharmacy services through the UNC Health Specialty Pharmacy, part of the UNC Health Systems network of retail operations.

Clinical services include robust acute and ambulatory care services. In the acute care setting, the department employs a decentralized model of practice, placing pharmacists directly into patient care units to provide integrated care as part of our multidisciplinary team. Every service in the hospital has a designated pharmacist who provides clinical and order verification coverage for patients for 16 hours a day. In the ambulatory clinic setting, our department employs over 40 individuals who are embedded as Clinic Based Pharmacists/Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners into a variety of primary and subspecialty clinics with locations in and around the Triangle.

The Pharmacy Department has adopted the staff governance model. This model will ensure that staff members are instrumental in the development and implementation of ideas that will directly impact the department’s operations, practice, performance improvement, professional development, and finance.
