Neurosciences ICU
Rotation Description
The NSICU at UNC Medical Center is a 22-bed unit at a tertiary academic medical center (Level 1 Trauma) serving critically ill neurosurgery and neurology patients. The patient population includes, but is not limited to the following clinical conditions: acute ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, central nervous system tumors, spinal cord injury, various spinal procedures, traumatic brain injury, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), myasthenia gravis and other neuromuscular disorders, and seizure disorders (acute and chronic). The NSICU rotation provides the opportunity for learners to have a hands on experience and will gain competency in the perioperative management of surgical patients, basic neurophysiology and anatomy, critical care pharmacotherapeutic principles, advanced ICU physiologic monitoring, overall ICU patient management, and multidisciplinary communication skills. The NSICU team consistent of the attending physician, neurocritical care fellow, nurse practitioners, nurses, respiratory therapists and various resident physicians including those from the emergency department, neurology and neurosurgery. Learners will interact with all members of the interdisciplinary team throughout their rotation, as well as consult teams specializing in care of targeted conditions (ex: infectious diseases, cardiology, heart failure, etc).
