Rotation Title
Pediatric Cardiology/Critical Care
Rotation Description:
The pediatric cardiology rotation allows the learner to advance clinical practice skills in both a critical care setting (pediatric cardiology intensive care unit) and an acute care cardiology floor setting. There will be a focus on transitions of care between these two settings, while also providing discharge counseling for patients (and families) on the acute care cardiology floor. The learner will demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, and complications of disease states commonly seen within pediatric cardiac patients. Pharmacy services and areas of focus will include participation in pediatric resuscitation during medical emergencies, nutrition management, pharmacokinetic monitoring, and medication reconciliation. This will all be done while providing pharmacy consults to both medical residents and patients. The medical teams will consist of a pediatric cardiology intensivist (both attending and fellow) in the intensive care unit, as well as the general pediatric cardiology team (to include medical residents) for floor patients. The learner will also work with nurse coordinators and dieticians assigned to the teams in order to provide the best clinical care for the patients and their families.
