Residents who successfully complete PGY1 residency programs will be skilled in diverse patient care, practice management, leadership, and education, and be prepared to provide patient care, seek board certification in pharmacotherapy (i.e., BCPS), and pursue advanced education and training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies.
Program Purpose (Year Two)

Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.
Additional Description
The combined Medication-Use Safety and Policy (MUSP) and policy two-year residency program at UNC Medical Center combines PGY1 and PGY2 training to produce specialized practitioner with advanced skills in all facets of the medication-use process. This specialty residency-training program provides practical experience in behind-the scenes management of the medication-use system.
PGY1 training will focus on building foundational knowledge in clinical, operational, and MUSP-related areas. Training will mirror the PGY-1 Acute Care Residency program with a particular emphasis on drug information, medication safety, and clinical policy. The PGY2 year will build upon PGY1 training, providing a core training experience in the core areas of drug information, formulary management, and medication safety while incorporating aspects of analytics, quality improvement, accreditation, and leadership. The PGY2 resident will integrate clinical, safety, policy, informatics, and drug distribution systems to optimize drug therapy for the entire UNC Health System, including 15+ hospitals, hundreds of clinics, and several infusion centers.
Throughout the residency years, the resident integrates himself/herself as a valuable member of the department of pharmacy and medication-use system. The multitude of PGY1 and PGY2 experiences culminate in the final Mastery Month rotation, where the resident functions independently as an additional member of the Medication-Use Policy and Analytics team. Upon completion of this program, the resident will be prepared to enter a variety of potential career fields including Drug Information, Formulary Management, Medication Safety, and Medication-Use Policy.
