PGY2 Infectious Diseases

Welcome! We are glad you’re interested in the PGY2 Infectious Diseases (ID) Pharmacy Residency at the University of North Carolina Medical Center!

Program Purpose

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

Additional Program Description

Our program is designed to provide to our residents a comprehensive training experience in a variety of ID practice areas. Our residents receive specialized ID training, gaining experience caring for diverse patient populations across acute and ambulatory care settings, including pediatrics to geriatrics, immunocompetent to immunocompromised, and everything between. In addition to clinical ID pharmacy practice, our program incorporates core training in the fundamentals of antimicrobial stewardship. Our residents receive training in dedicated antimicrobial stewardship learning experiences in addition to longitudinal service on our Carolina Antimicrobial Stewardship Program team.

The ID specialty is an exciting, evolving area of pharmacy practice. The future of ID pharmacy and antimicrobial stewardship will require expertise and leadership.
